GUEST SPEAKERS:    Johanna Haan

Roger McRae introduced Johanna Haan, who spoke about the Liberation of Holland. The Liberation started with the D-Day Landing in 1944. Holland was not immediately liberated as the terrain was difficult to cover. The winter of 1944 saw many people die due to starvation and cold as food and heating materials were severely rationed. Johanna was 2 years old when the Allied Forces finally moved into the Netherlands. Johanna’s mother met a young Canadian soldier at that time and he signed her identification card. His name was Jim Millen and he was from Rockford ON. Sixty years later Johanna’s family traced Jim’s whereabouts in Canada and met him in 2005 at a special ceremony in Guelph commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Liberation of Holland. Johanna presented a video of that ceremony .Of the 175,000 Canadians that helped to liberate Holland, 7600 never returned home. The Dutch people are very appreciative of that and hold a special place for Canadians in their heart. As a result, Johanna’s parents immigrated to Canada after the war.

Johanna asked the Club to stand for a moment of silence to remember the 42,000 Canadians that died in World War Two.

Audrey Chevalier thanked Johanna for her presentation and asked her to sign a book that will be contributed in her name to the C-K Public Library as part of the Club’s Literary Angels Program.
