Classification:   John Schinkel

Jim N introduced John Schinkel, our speaker today for his Classification. John & Maggie have become great friends of Laurie & Jim’s. John is committed to his community with a large heart for others – all qualities that make a great Rotarian.

John originated in Essex, where his family landed from Holland.  He is 1 of 6 siblings.    After Grade 12 at the Chatham Christian School, he went to his family’s business with the statement “No way I’ll cut meat for the rest of my life.” Hmmmm.

He has 2 daughters & a wedding coming up on the fall.  And he enjoys 2 step-sons of Maggie’s, Jeremy & Jacob.

All the way from a little meat market in Essex, to Loeb’s in Wallaceburg & Miracle Food Mart in Sarnia, he came back to the family’s Chatham store in 1994.   The family has been in business for 25 years now. John credits his success to a lot of local custom cutting & catering to special requests as well as a staff of 19 who all like to cook & enjoy food. There are current challenges making business difficult for the smaller operators. Recent food crisis have created consumer awareness of health & food safety, hence government regulations being increased & adding costs.

For John, life is great.  He enjoys Chatham Kent where he lives & has the opportunity to give back.    He joined CK Crime Stoppers for that specific reason.   He talked about Jim’s encouragement to join Rotary Sunrise.   John is very proud of what we accomplish as a team, how we do what we do for the community & for no other reason.  He’s proud to be a Rotarian.

Matt thanked John for his talk with us today! Wow, what a message.

Thought of the Day:

There can be no better introduction to the life of a community than one that comes through the local Rotary Club
