Guest Speaker:  Gary Switzer

John L introduced our guest, Gary Switzer today, CEO for the Local Health Integrated Network. Gary has a proven & genuine interest in our community & in health care.

LHIN’s began in 2005 & today are responsible for $1B tax dollars being spent in health care. LHIN is responsible for planning the health care system, for integrating services, for funding 88 agencies & for holding those agencies accountable for their spending.  They operate with a Board of Directors (Currently seeking for 2 vacant positions).  They too are facing the challenges of our current economy – the poor economy itself, a lack of resources (labour, nurses, again physicians), unemployment numbers, poor lifestyle habits, a higher population of seniors & larger numbers of people with chronic diseases (COPD, heart, diabetes, obesity, circulatory problems & strokes).

He spoke about the implementation of End of Life Plans, Meals on Wheels & care in the Emergency Departments. They are pushing to make the E Depts. more sustainable, to provide the care needed when it’s needed.   LHIN’s are also leading the HealthCare Connect for those without a doctor. Our healthcare impacts each of us, personally, through our businesses & through our own wellness.

Jim N thanked Gary for his visit today & “Curious George” for the Library was signed.

Closing Thought:

People who laugh actually live longer than those who don’t laugh. Few persons realize that health actually varies according to the amount of laughter.
                                                                                                                                           James J. Walsh
