Jackie received a call from her son, who is now coming to visit for 2 weeks in February.  She will still be able to go to Punta Cana, which means February is going to be a very busy, and exciting month!

John Lawrence has passed around the auction sheet for Mardi Gras, and is looking forward to seeing it filled up today! (hint hint)

Club Business:

Meeting tomorrow for the Ribfest Steering committee – 4:30 pm at Enviroshake

Bingo – need volunteers for next Saturday, Jan 23 at 7pm.

Silent Auction items are needed for Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras tickets are available, start telling your families and friends about the event on Feb. 12th at the Active Living Centre.  Bluetonium is playing, and tickets are available from Bonny now!

Terra notes that the Roses for Rotary work day will be Wednesday April 7th.  The committee will need help around 4 pm on the Tuesday to help unload – there will be more info to come.

From the District, Audrey notes that the PETS training will be in March, there will be 4 members from the club going on Saturday to see the motivational speaker – author of Who moved my Cheese?

John says that the speaker schedule is almost full – there is just one opening on January 26th

Jim thanks Bonny for her work in getting the CFDC grant application in – as we now have Susanne on board to help with Ribfest.  Susanne comes from a very community oriented family, is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario, and has graduated from Westervelt as a paralegal, in addition to studying in Italy.  She likes to read, and travel.

Paul updates everyone on the sponsorship meeting held Monday – there is a push to get high profile sponsors so that we can cover the overhead costs of the event, with all money raised going towards our donation commitments.  Blackburn has come on as a presenting partner with an in kind sponsorship of $25.  We will be targeting 3 or 4 $10-15 K sponsors, as well as each aspect of the event inside the venue will be offered up for sponsorship, with signage reflecting that.

Jim reminds everyone that we have made a commitment to the YMCA, so this event is one of the ways to help raise these funds.  John also notes that with his work with the YMCA, he has found that the community has been very positive and supportive of the new building, so we should be open with the public that Ribfest will help support it.

Guest Speaker - Betty DeBrun:

Audrey introduced Betty DeBrun from the Learning Disabilities Association of Chatham-Kent.  Betty speaks about learning disabilities, first by challenging the group to write their names on a piece of paper on their fore heads to demonstrate the process involved when writing.  Children with learning disabilities often have to think very hard before writing and are afraid that they will make a mistake.

10 to 15 % of the population has a learning disability. What is a learning disability?  It refers to a variety of disorders which affect the ability for process and organize information.   Children with learning disabilities often have average to above average intelligence.

Different types of disabilities include: dyslexia in which words appear not a row making them very hard to read, dysgraphia, the inability to write words down on paper, and dyscalculia which is a problem with math and memory.  All cause difficulties in school and have social implications.  Without diagnosis or assistance students often drop out of school – we want to keep them in school!

Illustrating the importance of assisting individuals with learning disabilities Betty shares a story from many years ago when she worked at the Teen Centre. She helped a teen who thought he was stupid because he had a learning disability. He had no help at home or at school and dropped out of school, began to sell drugs on the streets, and eventually contracted HIV.

50% of adolescent suicides involve people with learning disabilities and 60% of young offenders have one.

While learning disabilities are recognized by Ontario they do not receive the services and funding that more visible disabilities do.

Some well known people with learning disabilities: Keira Knightly, Tom Cruise, Orlando Bloom, Henry Winkler, Leonardo Davinci, Tommy Hilfieger, Henry Ford, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Beethoven, and Jay Leno all have dyslexia.

The Learning Disability Association is located at CKSS and was created in 1976.  It has a volunteer board and four paid staff. Funded partly by the United Way, the association has tutoring programs, social skills, programs, a resource library, computer programs, and information and referral programs.

Bill thanked Betty and offers a book to the Literary Angels on Betty’s behalf.
