 Birthdays and Anniversaries:

Happy Birthday, Jean Baker!

Thought of the Day:

Jean was very pleased to introduce Lauren today – her 3rd daughter!  Lauren came to Chatham Sunrise in 1998 (really January 1999 due to the Australian school year) as the Club’s first inbound Exchange Student.  She is originally from the Blue Mountains, 1 ˝ hr W of Sydney & now lives with her husband, Jim south of Sydney in Wollawonga.   She’s on her 3rd return trip to Canada since her exchange 10 years ago.  Her father is a Rotarian so she has grown up with Rotarians & the activities of a Rotarian family.   Her interest began with the students that they hosted in their home – from Minden, Ontario, Ohio, Denmark & South Africa.   She made it through the “grueling interview process” with 3 preferences for visiting – Canada, Denmark & South Africa.  Canada won out & she had a wonderful year.  CCI was her high school. Because she had already graduated & was accepted at an Australian university, she concentrated on sports & extracurricular activities (not dating though, fortunately for Jim!).  A high light was the cross-Canada bus tour with 97 other exchange students, some of which she still has contact! Lauren also remembers attending Heather Bondy’s son’s wedding in the Dominican.  And that she learned here how to play broomball – at least, she was on the ice, not necessarily playing, she says!

She returned to Australia after Exchange with some difficulties settling back,  meeting her husband in the BA of Education program, specializing in Health & Physical Education. She’s a high school teacher now.    Lauren’s currently engaged in a teachers’ exchange ( they have switched homes, jobs, cars, friends, etc with another teacher but she hasn’t met her counterpart) in Calgary, Alberta.  She’s there until December, teaching Gr’s 5-9 in a Middle School.   Jim was fortunate to find a substitute teaching position in the same school. They plan to spend a month in Mexico, Guatemala & Belize before returning.  They would like to take another trip to SE Asia & a skiing trip before they start a family.

When the time suits, Lauren really does hope to be a Rotarian.  To give back for the experiences that she has truly enjoyed.

Keith offered our Thanks to Lauren & Jim for returning to visit today.  Keith remembers a very optimistic lady from Australia who has a great attitude about life.  Lauren is not much different today as we listened to her life story so far!
