Guest Speaker - ART STIRLING:

Jim N introduced our guest today, Art Stirling.   Art is currently the Executive Director of the Children Treatment Foundation.  He’s active in his community, Blenheim area as well as sitting on CK Council.  When he heard that we meet Tuesday mornings, he knew right away – uh-oh!  Tues am’s are not good. However, here he is.

Art delivered the history &  a view of the services of the Centre, since its opening in 1948 as the Kent County Children’s Treatment Centre.    It is a volunteer, not-for-profit operation with 44 employees, including Heather Sarson (outbound GSE to Japan) as a musical therapist.  They operate on a variety of sources of government funding, being one of 20 such centres in Ontario, treating children ages birth up to 18 yrs old. Nearly 3000 clients visit annually.

The Foundation was formed in 2007, obtaining their Registered Charity Status in 2008, forming a Volunteer Board with one paid employee (Art).   They formed to create awareness & to raise funds for the Centre.    Their first campaign is currently underway “Every Child should be Heard”.

They are campaigning to provide a local option for treatment for children currently on a wait list of 18 – 24 months for services in the Thames Valley clinic.  If they can achieve their accreditation & raise $50,000 for needed equipment & staff training, they will provide a huge benefit for these children & their families.   There are 50 clients in the area that would qualify, with another 100 milder cases.  What a way to increase the child’s self confidence, independence & quality of life.

Thought of the Day:

“You can never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”
