Guest Speaker:  Don Hector

Sheila had the pleasure of introducing the guest speaker, Don Hector. Don, is a Fish & Wildlife Biologist with the MNR, based in Chatham.  He came to speak about the 3rd Annual Chatham-Kent Children’s Water Festival, October 6-8, 2009, hosted at the CM Wilson Conservation Area.   The 5 themes for the Festival are based on the School Board’s curriculum, (programming for Grades 3-4) – water conservation, water protection, water science, water technology & water attitude.   The children move through a variety of activities & displays, manned by many adult & high school student volunteers, learning about water in a fun & interactive way.

This is a community wide initiative, involving area corporations, small business, secondary schools, post secondary schools, the public sector, municipal & provincial governments & service Clubs.

They’re looking for volunteers, for a variety of jobs in preparation, organizing, setting up & actually teaching some displays.    1500 Grade 3&4 students visit over the 3 days for the full day program.

Support is needed for bussing, infrastructure costs, a Festival Coordinator as well as volunteers for setup, take down, logistical support (traffic, grounds, transportation, food).

Average cost per student is $25, each bus is $200 & each class is $500. Bussing for the whole time is $10,000

Contact the Festival for more information, Gale Steadman, Festival Coordinator, 519-355-0192 or gale@ciaccess.com

Is there any way that you can help?
