Guest Speaker:   Ken Gregory

Jim Nash introduced Ken today. They are great friends (from being in University together) & from being great friends of Rotary. Ken is Principal in Tilbury at the elementary school, & previously at King George in Chatham where his school held the highest scores for EQAO for a year.

Ken spoke about literacy & how it works in the current schools.    He offered “Literacy ss the morale of the story” & gave kudos to us for our partnership with the Early Years & the Books for Babies program.   Catching them when they are young is the key.    He played an amazing DVD of some of the facts about today’s world.  Watch the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mmz5qYbKsvM    How it’s different from when even we were younger.  That’s all gone. Kids are being taught to prepare for jobs that don’t even exist now.

It is no longer OK to quit school & to take a good job, to plan to raise a family on that good job. That won’t happen as our world shifts.   Those jobs are changing.

There are changes in legislation making it very difficult for kids to leave school without graduating & without having learned the basics.   The provincial Education Quality Accounting Office provides schools with measurement tools to catch those students who are failing. Special education tools are provided to support learning modifications (i.e. computers that talk to you.) Several initiatives are in place to provide high yield learning strategies so students may achieve their graduation, regardless of where they live.

It’s an incredibly changing world now, one where literacy (as it’s so vaguely defined now) & team work will be the preparation for the student’s life.

A book “How to Write Poems” was offered to the Literary Angels program in recognition of Ken’s time with us today.
