Guest Speakers: - Warrant Officer Ward Gapp

Jim Steele introduced our guest today, Warrant Officer Ward Gapp, who traveled in from Windsor today.   (Interesting, he mentioned 5 Chatham guys are returning from Afghanistan tours shortly).  Ward has been in the Forces for 29 years, completing 5 tours overseas, most recently in Afghanistan.  He works on a “Counter ID Team”, last tour being “outside the wire” near Kahbul.

For security reasons, he couldn’t reveal a lot of information to us & we have to be careful what is written. He talked of what an average day in the life of a soldier there is like &  how their team works with the bombs. They have to study the incidents, to determine who put the ID there, & why.  Often they disarm & dismantle, then package to send to the FBI for further forensics like finger prints & DNA.

The incidents are getting more frequent, the Taliban is getting smarter & the bombs are harder to detect.

Jim thanked WO Ward & a book “My Greatest Day” was signed for the Literary Angels program.

 Closing:

The National Anthem was sung and it brought a tear to your eye. You just had to be there!
