Guest Speakers -
Tracey and Rachelle - Adult
Language & Learning Center: |
|
Bonny
introduced our guests
today. Tracey Callaghan is
Executive Director of the
Adult Language & Learning
Centre, with Rachelle
Pascoe-Deslaurier, speaking
directly to the Immigrants’
programs. This group has
been in action for 25 years
now, offering much more than
Adult Basic Literacy. They
are not-for-profit &
complete many grants to get
what they do receive!

Their
upgrading programs offer
needs to every skill from
low-levels of literacy to
those who need to
concentrate on one
particular area because of
the profession that they are
in. Clients chose them for
a matter of independence, to
further their education or
to target a shift that is
employment-related.
Rachelle
talked specifically of the
programs in place for new
immigrants. They offer
much more then the typical
ESL. Interpreters are
available for 5 languages in
Chatham Kent. They have
partnerships with
neighboring Windsor-Essex
for up to 27 other
languages. Many programs
offer such skills &
information as grocery
shopping, enrolling children
in school, acceptable social
skills in Canada, and even
celebrating holidays like
Halloween. Even the recent
Elections candidates
appeared for a Party
presentation. All this
provided at no cost.

Jim
thanked Tracey & Rachelle
for being our guests for the
day. It’s important to have
these programs available as
we work to grow our
communities.
