Honourary
Membership: - to Ruth Howell |
Audrey
Chevalier & Steve Sadler
were invited to participate
in celebrating Ruth Howell,
bestowed with an Honourary
Member with the Rotary Club
of Chatham Sunrise.
Audrey gave a brief summary
of the Howells’ work with
Rotary through Max’s
membership. Ruth & Max took
their first humanitarian
trip to India with a team in
2002. Since then they have
continued with their
humanitarian work taking not
one but sometimes two Rotary
trips annually.
They have traveled
with team leaders Terry &
Mary Youlton on 4 trips
working in India, China and
Nepal to participate in
National Immunization Days (NID),
Jaipur Limb Camps and other
humanitarian work.
• with Rotary teams to the
Dominican Republic to
participate in water
projects.
• And they have hosted Youth
Exchange students
Ruth
has participated in every
Chatham Sunrise fundraising
event. She is a Paul Harris
Fellow and has received the
Ambassador of Goodwill
award. She’s an avid
photographer & many of us
have been recipients of her
photos.
She’s helped with the club’s
environmental projects and
has even been spotted
pulling weeds all by herself
at our Sunrise Carolinian
Forest. Ruth was a very
strong supporter of Max’s
Rotary work as Assistant
Governor and Group Study
Exchange team leader to
Peru.

An Honourary Membership
is the highest distinction
that a club may bestow.
Congratulations to Ruth &
welcome to the Rotary Club
of Chatham Sunrise.
Ruth extended her gratitude
for today’s Honour. She also
expressed appreciation for
those generous people who
gave to the Rotary
Foundation in Max’s memory.
64 donations have been
received.
Barry noted that Max lives
on in the GSE – there were
so many applicants for this
year’s team, it truly
reflects Max’s enthusiasm.

Guest Speaker: - Keith Koke |
|
Keith
Koke shared an audio/visual
presentation of the Polio
Plus eradication plans & our
promise to complete.
Just give 2 drops – that’s
all it takes to make a world
of difference for a child.
From the program’s beginning
in 1985, there were 1000
cases a day in 125
countries. Today, there’s
been a 99% reduction with
polio evident only in 4
countries – India, Nigeria,
Pakistan & Afghanistan.

WHO has
made it a top operational
priority.
RI received a $100M grant
from Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation, to be matched by
RI by DEC 2010.
RI is extending a challenge
to all clubs - $100M
Challenge, over a 3 Year
period. They’re looking for
a $1000 USD / year
commitment to get this
eradication complete. $20M
is current total.
Keith followed with a series
of slides from Audrey’s
India NID trips & his Niger
visits.
Jim thanked Keith for his
visit with us today &
offered commendation for
Keith’s continuing
stewardship & hard work
towards the polio
eradication.
