Guest Speaker:    Art Schaafsma

John L introduced our guest today, Dr Art Schaafsma, Principal at the University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus. The Doctor has a degree in horticulture, followed by a BA & Masters in Crop Protection, & currently sits on the SOBIN Board.

Dr Schaafsma explained briefly SOBIN's role in the partners in this tri-county area of Sarnia, Windsor & Chatham. They’re working to provide a new source of clean sustainable energy.

He explained one of the pending projects, growing miscanthus grasses.  Unlike the hemp productions that have come & gone, miscanthus is the next leading fuel source for Leamington’s green houses and the ethanol plant.  There are some barriers yet, with 3 years planned to get to full production.   He’s quite excited of the opportunities for renewable energy & the role that SOBIN is taking in support.

Blake presented Dr Schaafsma with a Literary Angel’s book, “this is my planet”.
